Tales of Snow and Chaos and Gardening and Such…

not-quite Journaling, 6

on fresh snow,
autumn lies dreaming

dreams of spring

2/1/2021: I’ve never been able to see a fallen oak leaf without thinking of autumn. The feeling gets stronger in winter (since in the cold, I always yearn… for warmer things). So, today, while good old NYC is being blanketed by snow, I am thinking of autumn and spring (and wondering what’s keeping summer-thoughts away).

2/6/2021: On my latest walk back from the hospital, I found myself looking for flowers (a silly thing, I know, since it’s the middle of winter). Still, I searched… After walking almost three miles, and seeing no blooms, my hopes were diminishing. Then, I ran into a small bush of wild daisies peeking through the snow. No, I did not fail to notice that they looked… dead(ish). I just also realized that they were pregnant with seeds. The latter inspired me to do a little dance (the cackles were inspired by the sight of several New Yorkers staring at the mad woman dancing on the sidewalk).

a criticizing
shadow, spewing unkindness,
will seethe when ignored

2/9/21: The other day, I glimpsed an individual, who delights in spreading poisonous rumors, being consumed by helplessness-infused rage fed by the realization that no one cared about them or their nonsense; for a not-so strange reason, the wicked sight made me grin for a long, long, long time. 😁 Yep, I’m a terrible woman! Bwahahaha!

Chaos is fun,

in theory.

2/11/2021: A few years ago (while drunk on ridiculousness, I’m sure), I decided that storing my blackouts in a box (no order necessary) would be a splendid idea. I convinced myself that organizing the whole thing later would be fun. What was I thinking! 😭 Now, the only thing I’m sure of is that the process will take months—I hope you are ready for a reposting (or 13), since I keep finding bits I wish to reshare. That, at least, is fun.

Snow coats New York City roofs and a green pepper grows—winter magic.

  1. Ohh, you make me want to try some not-quite-journalling like this. But I know me: I'd abandon it very soon. Instead, I'm glad to enjoy yours.

    1. I'm terrible at keeping a journal, which is why I started not-quite journaling. It allows me to go at my own pace, and I add whatever feels journal like.

  3. What a lovely combination of words and images, Magaly. Your living room jungle reminded me of the one I had before I moved to a cottage in the country and had the pleasure of a garden. I love how you squeezed three seasons into one senryu! While you still have snow, our garden is completely clear, although my husband said there are still big banks of snow at the sides of some of the lanes, although we had a very mild day yesterday. I wish I could send you some of our snowdrops.

  4. And I stare at the oak leaf and imagine what it underneath, still there. I love dried flowers and your insight on chaos.

  5. I know the snowdrops are out there... way, way under the foot plus of snow we got in the last couple of weeks. The forsythia buds will probably be the first signs of spring I'll spot. That bit from the 6th still has me grinning.

    1. The wee pepper is as big as a lemon right now. I keep on glancing at it and smiling. I'm pretty sure it's smiling back.

  12. I enjoyed these so much. Each one is rich in creativity and wisdom. I like your idea of not quite journaling. Hope you don't mind if I try it. Each morning I awaken with so many thoughts. But then life takes over and I don't write anything down. You have inspired me to try harder and write at least a few thoughts.

    1. Go for it, Myrna! I hope you share them too. I can never truly commit to writing a full journal entry every day--doing so feels like a chore sometimes--but this is fun.

  13. Your wee living room jungle reminds me of our first apartment (me and my better half). It was at the beach on an access road. There were no others to be found, so even tho it was tiny and there was a hole in the shower wall, and the kitchen had peeling paint, we took it. Filled it with plants. Had to carry them out every weekend to get sunshine because apartment was so dark. I think we had a hundred....or it seemed so. I would do it all over again. Stay warm, girl.

  18. I'm glad you find the beauty in the snow: a fallen leaf or trail but then the discovery of seeds life frozen in time.

While in defiance, your winter garden grows!
