Magic Is Mind-Miracles

It wasn’t a spell, except in her own head, but if you couldn’t make spells work in your own head you couldn’t make them work at all.  ~ Terry Pratchett

a marvelously wild mine

of mind-miracles

- my rather ugly hospital gown and I were waiting to get an MRI biopsy, when another patient said to me, “I’m praying too, but I can’t close my eyes. When I close them, all I see is cancer.” I opened my eyes (which to prove none of us can escape the claws of cliché, I hadn’t realized I had closed) and said to the lady, “I wasn’t praying. I was chanting some of the good wishes shared by friends who know I’m here. It’s my favorite kind of magic.” The lady looked at me as if I had gone insane and, I kid you not, took a step away from me—mind you, we were already separated by about 6 feet or so and a glass partition. I closed my eyes again, and continued chanting some of the thoughts offered by friends: “Sending all my good vibes and hopes for benign results” and “Prayers, blessings, light and love vibes are traveling the winds to keep you safe and whole” and “Whatever happens u will right above it” and “…may your bras never need to be altered and boob be strong x 13” … Behind the thoughts of my friends’ thoughts, I was also wondering how anyone could believe in the power of prayer and not feel the strong magic of positive thought. Weird, isn’t it?

  1. Weird indeed! Years ago I read a book titled "Image your Way To Success", and I have always believed poaitive thought has much to do with our well-being. Good to know you're wrapped in positive thoughts. They will serve you well!!

    1. Some people are just really strange creatures. I've always been convinced that all positive things, from a smile to doing something for someone else, is good for the health of body and spirit. I can't understand people who don't see this. But hey, it takes all kinds to make a world, right?

    2. Oh, and thank you, Bev. I bet positive thoughts do the same for you.

  2. Mmmmm!(sic). Love it all. The Perfect Pratchett quote, the lovely – and wise – senryu, and the background story which is certainly rather mind-boggling. And oh, what a lovely mind-magic to make, chanting those beautiful good wishes from people who love you!

    1. I love that quote. And I love repeating quotes and positive things in my head (and sometimes aloud) when doctors are sticking huge needles in me. It helps distract me and it makes me feel better, too--win, win.

  3. Just murmur an "omm" or two with your eyes closed and that should relax you a bit!

    1. You know, I've never done that. But I will give it go one of these days. ;-)

  5. These medical procedures are daunting enough without the unwelcome
comments and conversation of strangers Positive thinking is the only way to go... one day at a time...

    1. Maybe intruding in other people's thoughts is her way to cope. Who knows.

  6. A mine of mind miracles! Staying with the M theme, just marvelous! "May your bras never need to be altered," is such a great thing for a friend to say. And, yes, it's strange prayer is a sanctioned action, while anything else is considered worthless. There's a lot to be said about positive thoughts. We can do ourselves a lot of good with those!

    1. When it comes to belief (and living and letting live) society can be a very weird monster, and not in a nice Addams Family sort of way. One just needs to keep on keeping on, methinks.

  8. Nice Senryu, Magaly.
Magic and Miracles by their names aren't real but they do happen. You are on my prayer ladder, way up.
And, ... my only blood niece has just started your ritual. Since we are Houston she is being by the M D Andersen group. Mrs. Jim worked there, a social worker, for three years before she went with the schools. It is a good place, as a patient or an employee.
    Barb just turned 60.

    1. I hope your niece's journey is as gentle as these things can be. My main hospital is a really good place, too. I really like my regular doctors and nurses and the rest of the staff.

  9. I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve had to don an ugly hospital gown again and undergo an MRI biopsy. A great way to go, Magaly, ‘chanting some of the good wishes shared by friends ‘ – the best kind of magic Is mind-miracles, and I love your haiku which is mmm! Stay safe, and I hop the results are positive.

    1. The thing was too big, the material felt like tarpaulin on the skin, and it included no trousers! All right, I will stop complaining. I had leggings with me anyway, lol! And now that the results are back, and all is well *hooray!*, I'm starting to feel that the gown wasn't as ugly as I remember.

  10. That has been an everlasting question of mine as well, how can you believe in miracles and not have faith in magic. I am a serious believer in positive thoughts and energy. I love the possessiveness of this, that the magic, the thoughts, the miracles are yours, you speak them to yourself and create your own (self-healing) magic even when the words come from afar. Sending you hugs and positive reinforcement!

    1. I think too many people get lost in the semantics. Maybe they'll get lucky and find themselves, one of these days.

Thank you so much for the hugs and positivity!

  11. I'm all for magic in whatever form it suits. Your fellow patient sounds like she was either a Fundamentalist bible-thumper or an acerbic atheist. Can't stand either one. Best wishes for the magic to work well!

    1. I think she was probably just a scared woman trying to get some control of her world anyway she could. She looked like a first timer. One can often tell who's there for the first time and who is there in order to keep an eye on things. She looked really spooked. If being intrusive gave her some peace--or helped forget her fears for a moment--more power to her, right?

Thank you for the wishes! The magic worked.

  14. Love the writing, Magaly. I am surprised that anyone would find positive thinking in any form to be strange.
