Wild Bits on Writing and Living, the 1st: Maladroit

She asked if I had ever been dragged kicking and screaming and cursing in Spanish out of my comfort zone, just to end up having to admit that the new digs are rather awesome. All right, so Rommy might’ve said it differently, but that is what I heard. My answer? Well… who hasn’t!

The first thing that comes to mind—when the topic of unwanted change bursts into the room—is poetry. I couldn’t stand it (things have changed a bit). On a fresher front, I’ve been drawing (since certain cognitive psychologist keeps reminding me that drawing and writing exercise different parts of the brain and doing both is best). I’m not terribly skilled at the art of making pictures that arent made of words. But you know I’ll try anything once, often thrice (the moment my brain grows some abs, I’ll totally show them to you).

a (cherita) poem (for the Poetry Pantry #495 and the Sunday Muse #75) inspired by Kim’s Weekend Mini Challenge (Maladroit, which means “awkward in movement or unskilled in behavior or action”) and my latest drawing (see below):

Watching everyone ahead,

sure of step
and climbing higher.

When I stumble, I remember
stubbornness can conquer
maladroit beginnings.

some time ago, I promised a friend (who’s not on social media) that I would share weekly links to my Instagram posts on my blog. I, um… forgot. So, here are the last couple of weeks of sharing. And I shall try to remember next week, I promise *cough*:

    1. At the risk of committing cliche on the first degree, I shall say that the fall is never as important as the getting up and kicking. And we are great kickers, aren't we?

  2. Firstly, the wild bits and the image are perfect partners, Magaly, as are you and Rommy! And I love your cherita, especially the thought that ‘stubbornness can conquer maladroit beginnings’, although I’m past the beginnings now, having been awkward all my life.

    1. Once, they asked me my name right before radiation, and for some reason only the universe knows, I gave them my grandmother's name. There was much cackling.

  5. You poem made me think of that saying - "It's not how many times we fall but in how many times we get up after we fall" You can't keep a good thing down that's for sure. I love the art. I can see the smile and found myself gazing into a galaxy of the eye. All the twisting and turning leading to something beautiful.

    1. Twists and turns craft unexpected art, that's for sure.

  6. Bwahahahahahahhahahahaha! Sometimes stubbornness is the only thing that gets me through. I can recall gritting my teeth in the home stretch of a project that I wanted to abandon, and muttering, "I'm only finishing because I said I would."

  9. Brain abs...I'm going to be stuck on that image for a little while. :) I love the image (and its title) and the poem. I'm a stubborn never-again-will-I-do-this and I could--sometimes--use stubbornness in the opposite direction.

  11. Stubbornness can be a good trait, but I also like your opening statement. It is healthy to try new things.

  12. Oh I agree, with stubbornness you certainly can go further... you might hurt your toes when you stumble, but in the end you will be there at the summit...

  13. Well, I just love everything about this post. Most especially your humour and that way you make everything tantalizing - even something as uncomfortable as unwanted change. You have this gift with your words. Your cherita of strength and perseverence and your artwork of swirling, sparkly wisdom (my interpretation) are inspiring and speak volumes about you. ;-)

  15. I especially love "Dream tangible realities." ❤️ I resonate with being stubborn as sometimes it's the only way to get things done. And why not? Given the other way around wouldn't maladroit keep us from accomplishing goals?

  16. Stubbornness. It keeps us moving dorsn't it?

  20. Totally 'got' your take on getting out of your comfort zone … and on stubbornness. Loved your artwork. Somethings seem to just have to be set down in a picture. Other things take words. I suspect musicians might say the same about music.

  22. Gosh, I love your picture-not-made-of-words. And the words too. Stubbornness, otherwise known as determination and/or a can-do attitude, is very important. A very determined friend, who has been healing herself demonstrably from things the doctors said would kill her seven years ago, has been drumming that into me all weekend to try and ensure I take the best possible care of my own health and don't risk descending into dementia or frailty. She is such a shining example, I have to see the point. And if I were to forget ... I also have your example!

  24. Love that answer to Rommy, "...who hasn’t!" And the cherita, it feels as if you've written for me. Only in my case the word is not maladroit but late bloomer. Stubbornness is sure a required antidote. Powerful poem and brilliant drawings!

  25. Love the art in both forms poem and image. Most of my climbs have been falling off the mountain and trying again. Oh, and lots and lots of cursing. lol
