Real Magic

not-quite Journaling, 17

 the poetry:

 A witch knows
real magic isn’t conjured
out of hats: power lies
not in trickery but in work.

To feel magic,
stick your fingers in the dirt.
To craft magic,
plant a well-loved seed.
To see magic,
care for each sprout and watch it
grow into fruit—

the harvest of your work is always
a taste of real magic.

and the inspiration:

7/17/2021: New York City has been under a heat advisory for the last few days. With temperatures around 90 °F sucking moisture out of everything, I’ve had to water my wee garden twice a day, even thrice a day (in the case of plants in small pots). The birdbath has been a busy place. And the whole garden has been extra-lively with bees and wasps and stink bugs and other winged things. I don’t particularly enjoy the intense heat, but I am grateful that it gives me a chance to make life easier for other living things. I hope you are having a good weekend. If not, I hope you’ve found a way to get something good out of the bad.

7/20/2021: It looks like one of my tomatoes is either cloning itself or masquerading as a tiny gourd (some of my Instagram friends suggested that it might be a blushing snowman or BB-8).

    1. Mother Nature isn't happy. And who can blame her? We've made quite the mess.

  3. Oh, how very true! It's is magic, or almost magic, to see all that one tiny speck of seed can become! I love that tomato! They look so ready to pop in your mouth!

    1. Indeed, Nature certainly is the "DIVINE" that touches us.

  5. Nothing is quite as satisfying as having a garden that enjoys the hard work you put into it. Flowers are fine but I always had great pride in growing vegeatable and and even fruit trees.

  7. yes, hard work, and the love of what you are doing, is the real magic. (does it applies to poetry?)

    1. I think it applies to all things, including poetry (all right, especially poetry).

  8. Yes, your poetry is a recipe for true magic. Not only for nature's treasures, but for one's self as well. Plant a seed in the soil of one's soul, care for it, and watch it sprout into love. That will be the harvest.

    I dont know what a BB-8 is. ??

    1. "Plant a seed in the soil of one's soul..." I love that.

BB-8 is a robot in the Star Wars movies. It has a small round head set on a bigger round body.

  9. I like your poem, Real Magic, a lot. It makes a lot of sense; real magic isn't abstract but putting effort in whatever one is working on.

Wishing you a lovely Summer, despite the heat. Hope you take it easy with those workouts and give your joints a break. <3

    1. Thank you, Khaya. I've been letting my flesh and bones rest for a while. Now, I can start (again) at a less insane pace.
